The starter kit (includes the manual, the user's guide, and scoring key) costs $135.00 for the small kit (25 paper tests and profiles) or $235.00 for the large kit (100 paper tests and profiles). The small and large kits can be purchased with the "Connecting Clinician and Client" DVD for $175.00 or $270.00, respectively. The manual can be purchased for $45.00, and the user's guide costs $35.00. The scoring key costs $10.00, and paper tests can be purchased in packages of 25 or 100 for $55.00 or $175.00 each, respectively. The DVD costs $65.00 and CD costs $25. Scoring can be done manually or using the SASSI software. Scoring and interpretation is to be completed by human service practitioners (e.g., social workers, psychologists, addiction counsellors, etc.), or by individuals who have completed authorized SASSI training (please see Online Resources for more information).

The measure was developed on a sample of 2,326 adolescents from substance abuse treatment centres, inpatient and outpatient facilities, and correctional facilities in the United States and Canada. Participants were 74% male and 24% female (2% did not indicate gender). In terms of ethnicity, the sample was 56% Caucasian, 10% African American, 12% Hispanic, 9% Native American, 2% Asian American, and 11% ""other"".

The authors report internal consistency reliabilities (alphas) of 0.61-0.75 and test-retest reliabilities of 0.71-0.92.

The authors report evidence of discriminative validity, good sensitivity and specificity, and minimal convergent validity. Stein et al. (2005) report evidence of discriminative validity, good sensitivity and specificity, and moderate convergent validity.
