Adaptive behaviour skills.

This measure is designed to assess adaptive behaviour skills in children and adults.

This measure can be used to help identify and diagnose developmental and other psychiatric disorders. It can also be used to help identify an individual’s particular strengths and weaknesses in terms of adaptive behaviour skills. It may also be useful as a needs assessment tool for planning interventions.

Children and adults. Respondents may be parents, primary care givers, teachers, day care workers or other health care professionals familiar with the subject’s daily life.

All reliability and validity information comes from the product manual, authored by the developers. No independent studies or replications could be found to corroborate the findings reported here.

Parent/teacher/health care worker report. Self-report for those 16 or older who are able.

10 skill areas in 4 domains. Skill areas are: Communication, Community Use, Functional Academics, Health and Safety, Home/School Living, Leisure, Self-care, Self-direction, Social, and Work. Domains are: Conceptual, Social, Practical, and General Adaptive Composite (GAC).

4-point Likert scales from 0 (is not able to perform the task) to 3 (always or almost always performs the task). There is also a box to check to indicate that the respondent guessed.

15-30 minutes to administer; 10 minutes to score.

Measure must be administered by a licensed practitioner in an allied health care field that requires training and experience in assessment, a master’s degree in a relevant discipline.

Test can be scored manually, but there is a computer program included in the package that will calculate the scores and generate a report for the administrator. Interpretation of results requires training in an allied health or health care field, and should be limited to clinicians.

The ABAS was standardized on a large, representative sample that was based on U.S. census data from 1999 and 2000. The sample was stratified by sex, geographic region, clinical status, education level, and race/ethnicity. The infant-preschool norms were derived from data obtained from 750 teacher/daycare provider forms and 1,350 parent/primary caregiver forms. The school-age norms were derived from data obtained from 1,690 teacher forms and 1,670 parent forms. Adult norms were derived from data obtained from 990 self-report forms and 920 forms that were rated by others. Norms are available for a wide range of ages.

Internal consistency was reported to be excellent, with alpha coefficients ranging from 0.80-0.99. Test-retest reliability was also very good with coefficients in the 0.70s to the 0.90s (interval between tests raging from two days to six weeks). Inter-rater reliabilities were reported with coefficients ranging from 0.70 to 0.91.

The ABAS has excellent convergent validity, showing significant correlations with a number of other measures of adaptive behaviour, as well as measures of general intelligence. It also demonstrates good sensitivity in that clinical samples tended to have lower scores on the ABAS than non-clinical samples. Additionally, the ABAS demonstrated good specificity in that it was able to differentiate different levels of mental retardation in both children and in adults.
