This instrument is intended as a diagnostic measure for ADHD in children and adolescents.

The author identifies three possible uses of information:

1. To assist in the diagnosis of ADHD in children and adolescents
2. As a screening measure for ADHD in children and adolescents.
3. To help in developing treatment/intervention goals for home and school environments.

The ADDES-4 School Version was standardized on a sample of 3,356 students from 20 states, including students identified with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Separate norms were established for male and female students.

The author indicates that internal consistency coefficients have been above 0.90 for all editions of the ADDES, with the ADDES-3 and ADDES-4 achieving an internal consistency of 0.99. Test-retest reliabilities are given as 0.90 (ADDES), 0.88-0.97 (ADDES-2), 0.87 (ADDES-3) and above 0.91 (ADDES-4). Inter-rater reliabilities are given as 0.80 (ADDES), 0.82 and 0.85 (ADDES-2), 0.78-0.84 (ADDES-3) and 0.85-0.90 for all ages (ADDES-4).

The author provides evidence of moderate to strong concurrent validity, some evidence of convergent validity, and minimal discriminative validity. Bussing et al (1998) found the ADDES to have low sensitivity.
