Scoring can be done manually or using the CDI 2 Software Scoring Program. Scoring and interpretation requires advanced training in psychological assessment.

Normative sample for self-report forms includes 1,100 children aged 7-17 years from 26 different states in the U.S. Gender and age are evenly distributed with 50 girls and 50 boys for each age between 7 and 17. In terms of race/ethnicity, the sample reflects the distributions found in the 2000 U.S. Census very closely. A clinical sample of 319 youth aged 7-17 years diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (33.86%), ADHD (28.21%), Conduct Disorder (14.11%), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (13.79%), or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (10.03%) was also included. Standardization samples for the teacher form included 600 children and youth between 7-17 years, while the parent form included 800 in the same age range, with gender evenly distributed for both. Samples were selected to be more representative of the U.S. population, while clinical data for standardization was obtained from the original CDI. For these samples, 167 parent evaluations and 114 teacher evaluations were completed with children of various diagnoses.

In terms of internal consistency, a meta-analysis (Sun & Wang, 2014; see key references) pooled CDI-2 Cronbach's alphas from 283 primary studies conducted all over the world. Average alpha values were .841 for the English version (based on 207 primary studies), .836 for the Spanish version (based on 13 primary studies), .827 for the Arabic version (based on 5 primary studies), .872 for the Chinese version (based on 12 primary studies), and .829 for the Dutch version (based on 11 primary studies). CDI-2 authors report evidence of internal consistency alphas ranging from .73 to .91 for the total sample across all forms and versions of the CDI 2. Across gender and age for all forms, internal consistency alphas range from .69 to .92, including subscales and total scores.

Test-retest reliability is also reported by authors for the self-report forms for 2 to 4 weeks as ranging from r=.76 to r=.92. Test-retest reliabilities for parent form refers to the original CDI in 2003 indicating a 1 week period of at-risk children as r=.92 and a 3 month period as r=.56. The control children of the parent forms reported 1 week intervals as r=.75 and r=.86 for up to 3 months.

Authors report evidence of discriminative validity and convergent validity, with high specificity and high sensitivity scores.
