Cohesion (bonding) and adaptability (flexibility). Family communication component assesses communication and the family satisfaction component assesses how happy family members are with their family system.
To assess the cohesion and flexibility of families along a number of dimensions.
Collects information about the family regarding bonding, flexibility, and communication. Uses this information to create a family type. This profile can then be used to guide family therapy and focus on areas that require increased attention.
62: 42-item FACES IV (six subscales with 7-items each), 10 item family communication scale, 10 item family satisfaction scale.
Two balanced and four unbalanced.
Balanced scales: Balanced Cohesion and Balanced Flexibility.
Unbalanced scales: Disengaged, Enmeshed, Rigid, and Chaotic.
5-point Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Family satisfaction scale is rated on a 5-point scale from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied).
Information not indicated / not available at this time
None (self-report).
Scoring can be done manually or electronically using an Excel file available from the publisher's website (please see contact information and online resources sections below). Using a cluster analysis of all six scales, a family is identified as one of six types: balanced, rigidly cohesive, mid range, flexibly unbalanced, chaotically unbalanced, or unbalanced. For balanced scales a higher score means more positive rating; for unbalanced scales a higher score indicates a family system that is more problematic. Use of the measure (and therefore scoring and interpretation) is restricted to clinicians and researchers who have completed or are in the process of completing graduate degrees in relevant fields.
The norms, reliability and validity statistics included in each measure profile are those reported by the author(s) of the measure. It is important to note that altering, adding or removing questions from a measure voids these reported statistics, possibly making the revised tool unreliable and invalid.
Psychometric properties were established from a sample of 2,359 individuals. Total sample was made up of samples across 9 different states.
