Concurrent disorders, where mental health and substance use concerns intersect, pose a complex array of challenges for both those who provide care and seek it. While there isn’t one specific cause, various risks rooted in the interaction between substance use and mental health, have been identified.

Currently, young people face significant hurdles when accessing appropriate care, and many service providers lack the resources and capacity to adequately meet the needs of those with concurrent mental health and substance use concerns. Overcoming these systemic barriers is crucial to improving the care and outcomes for young people with concurrent disorders.

This resource “Understanding Concurrent Disorders” was created to inform those working with and supporting young people about concurrent disorders. The resource is for agencies that are looking to improve how they address and deliver care to young people with concurrent disorders.
